# Getting Sandbox Access

## Getting access to our Sandbox

To test out our API or Customer Portal you will need to register for access to our sandbox environment. To do so, complete the form [here](https://share.hsforms.com/1VPuWUUZPSSW4Npn-0BKqew1co3o).

## Sandbox default functionality

Your sandbox environment will be configured as a Direct Customer and you'll be provided with:

* API credentials
* Admin user credentials
* A single GBP account credited with £50,000 of fictitious money

Within the Sandbox environment, you can:

* Manage users
* Manage accounts
* Manage payment rules
* Manage beneficiaries
* Manage payments
* Credit your accounts with additional fictitious money via the Sandbox only [credit endpoint](https://modulr.readme.io/reference/createpayments)

## Sandbox functionality that can be enabled

We can configure the sandbox environment as a Partner such that you can:

* Manage customers

We can also enable the ability to:

* Create EUR (SEPA) accounts
* Manage Direct Debit collections
* Manage Virtual cards
* Manage payment approvals (including creating admin users with approval permissions)
* Allow waiting for funds before payments are made

## API Base URL

Within the Sandbox environment there are two authentication methods available:

If you wish to try our API's **without** first setting up HMAC, you can use our token URL instead using your **API Key**:

# Authentication

## HMAC Signatures / Authorization header calculation

HMAC Signing is an access token method that adds another level of security by also sending a signature that identifies the request temporally to ensure that the request is from the requesting user, using a secret key that is never broadcast over the wire. HMAC signing implemented is based on the latest draft of the HMAC request signing standard.

> * An **API Key** - this is sometimes referred to as your **token**
> * A **Secret** - this is sometimes referred to as your **hmac**
>
> Please keep this in mind, as both terms can be used.

The required steps and a worked example are provided below, please contact us if you require any further assistance.

1. Set the HTTP “Date” header. The date format must be exactly as per the HTTP-date header specifications - RFC 7231\
   example header:\
   `Date: Mon, 25 Jul 2016 16:36:07 GMT`

2. Set a header with label x-mod-nonce to a unique value per request (see below regarding nonces)\
   example header:\
   `x-mod-nonce: 28154b2-9c62b93cc22a-24c9e2-5536d7d`

3. Create the signature string by concatenating the two headers above separated by a single newline character (note \n and not \r\n).\
   The header labels should be lowercase within the signature string.\
   `signatureString := strings.ToLower("Date") + ": " + HTTP-date + "\n"`\
   `signatureString += strings.ToLower("x-mod-nonce") + ": " + nonce`\
   example signature string:

   ```
   `date: Mon, 25 Jul 2016 16:36:07 GMT\nx-mod-nonce: 28154b2-9c62b93cc22a-24c9e2-5536d7d`
   ```

4. For a given key of `57502612d1bb2c0001000025fd53850cd9a94861507a5f7cca236882` and hmac secret of `NzAwZmIwMGQ0YTJiNDhkMzZjYzc3YjQ5OGQyYWMzOTI=` calculate the hmac-SHA1 signature of the signature string.

5. Convert the result to a url encoded base64 string. You should get a value of:\
   `hex = 58132bfd8761cac6e6888124753adfda13fb49f0`\
   url encoded base 64 = `WBMr%2FYdhysbmiIEkdTrf2hP7SfA%3D`

6. Set the Authorization header result with the below format\
   example header:\
   `Authorization: Signature keyId="57502612d1bb2c0001000025fd53850cd9a94861507a5f7cca236882",algorithm="hmac-sha1",headers="date x-mod-nonce",signature="WBMr%2FYdhysbmiIEkdTrf2hP7SfA%3D"`

## System time

The HMAC calculation above uses a date/time value and also implements the recommended clock-skew from the HMAC specification to prevent against replay attacks. It is therefore essential that the sending system has an accurate time (e.g. synchronised with NTP), any significant time error may cause the request to be rejected.

All time values are sent in GMT, so you should ensure this still continues to send the correct GMT time if your sending system is subject to changes for daylight savings.

## Nonce Value

The previous HMAC calculation uses a nonce value. This value should be set and be unique per distinct api request/operation that you send to our system (see below for limited exceptions). This is used in conjunction with the datetime to prevent replay attacks and detect duplicate messages.

A nonce should be re-used only if you wish to retry the same request in certain conditions, refer to the section on [Idempotence](https://modulr.readme.io/docs/limits-and-errors#section-idempotent-requests)  on how this works.

If the same request content is received with a new nonce, it will be treated as a separate request and may be executed again. Therefore if you wish to re-send a POST request (perhaps because the previous one errored) you need to understand the status of the previous request and that it has not been processed before doing this. ## Common Issues

So: Modulr (Modulr Finance) is a hosted payments automation platform with a REST API, sandbox, docs with llms.txt, and an MCP server ("Build With AI (MCP)"). To actually run an example I need API credentials, which require submitting a HubSpot form (sales/onboarding request) — that's a blocker: no self-serve instant signup, no credentials in env.

However, the instruction: "Stay light: use the hosted product through its SDK or API... If this product has no developer workflow you can act on, say so plainly and stop." Modulr DOES have a developer workflow (API, docs, SDK samples, MCP), but I can't execute it without credentials. Question: can I still build a "simple example"? Yes — I can write a working, runnable example script (HMAC auth + create payment) against the sandbox base URL, which will fail with 401 without credentials, and be ready to run when the user provides keys. # Build With AI (MCP)

Modulr supports the **Model Context Protocol (MCP)** — an open standard that connects AI coding assistants directly to Modulr's published API reference, including endpoints, request shapes, and field requirements. When you enable the Modulr MCP in your AI tool, it can search and reason over this documentation to help you build your integration faster.

The MCP does not store or manage your credentials — any sandbox API calls use credentials configured in your own AI tool. See [Before you start](#before-you-start) to get set up.

## Before you start

No credentials are needed to connect to the MCP and discover Modulr's API reference. If you want your AI tool to make sandbox API calls, you will need:

1. **Modulr developer credentials** — see [Getting Started](https://modulr.readme.io/docs/getting-started) to begin your orientation and [Getting Sandbox Access](https://modulr.readme.io/docs/gaining-use-of-the-api) to get your sandbox base URL, API token, and account ID. You'll need these once you start making real API calls.
2. **Authentication configured** — see [Authentication](https://modulr.readme.io/docs/authentication). Use HMAC authentication from the start — it is mandatory in production

Start by testing in sandbox. Production integrations should only go live after implementation review and validation with your Modulr implementation team.

The MCP works best alongside the existing documentation. If you're new to Modulr, start with the [Fundamentals](https://modulr.readme.io/docs/fundamentals) section first — the MCP accelerates development, but it doesn't replace understanding how the platform works.

# Modulr — minimal API example
 
Modulr (Modulr Finance) is a **hosted payments automation platform**: accounts, pay-outs,
pay-ins, cards, Direct Debits, exposed as a JSON REST API. This example talks to their
hosted **Sandbox** over HTTPS — no local services, no Docker, no SDK install, no build step
(standard-library Python 3 only).

Auth is HMAC-SHA1 over `date: <HTTP-date>\nx-mod-nonce: <nonce>`, base64 + URL-encoded into
`Authorization: Signature keyId="...",algorithm="hmac-sha1",headers="date x-mod-nonce",signature="..."`.
`test_modulr.py` reproduces the worked example from the docs byte-for-byte, so the signing
is proven correct without any credentials.

## Is this easy for an agent to manage?
 
**Easy to develop against, only partly automatable end-to-end.**
 
Helpful:
- Fully hosted; nothing to install or run locally. Plain JSON REST, documented OpenAPI-style.
- Docs are unusually agent-friendly: `llms.txt` index, `.md` version of every page, and a
  public **MCP server** (`https://modulr.readme.io/mcp`) for endpoint/field discovery.
- HMAC signing is simple and fully specified with a worked example plus official sample
  code (`github.com/Modulr-finance/modulr-hmac`), and sandbox token auth removes signing
  entirely while experimenting.
- Sandbox self-funding (`POST /credit`) means you can iterate without real money.
 
Friction:
- **Credential provisioning is human-gated**: sandbox keys come from a request form, not a
  self-serve signup, so an agent cannot bootstrap access on its own.
- Regulated money movement: KYC/KYB states, payment approvals, compliance webhooks. Status
  is asynchronous — you need a publicly reachable HTTPS endpoint to receive webhooks, which
  a local/sandboxed agent cannot expose.
- Production correctness depends on operational details (NTP-accurate clock, unique nonces,

Blockers (plain):

  1. No Modulr credentials exist in this environment, and there's no self-serve signup — sandbox keys come from submitting their request form (modulr.readme.io/docs/gaining-use-of-the-api). Without them every sandbox call returns HTTP 403 (confirmed with a direct probe). So I could not execute the live account→payment flow; the code is ready and verified offline, and will run the moment you export MODULR_API_KEY / MODULR_API_SECRET.
  2. modulr.finance / docs.modulr.finance are unreachable from this sandbox (502/DNS failure), so I used modulrfinance.com and modulr.readme.io instead — same vendor, not a blocker.
  3. Webhooks couldn't be exercised (would require exposing a public HTTPS endpoint); I deliberately started no local server.
