Help me build a simple example using Moderne. Tell me how pricing works, and briefly tell me whether this product will be easy for you to manage. Let me know if you get blocked. If this product has no developer workflow you can act on, say so plainly and stop. Stay light: use the hosted product through its SDK or API. Do not start local service stacks or wait for long-running commands; if the quickstart requires either, say so plainly and stop.

Moderne is OpenRewrite's commercial product — large-scale source code remediation. Let me check whether there's an SDK/API and whether pricing is available. I should probably check the environment for credentials/API keys.

Let me check the repo and environment variables.

The repository is basically empty. Network check: api.moderne.io returned 502 — maybe there's a proxy that only allows specific hosts. Let me check a few endpoints.

The network is partially functional. Modern's API requires an API key, which we don't have. The user requested to build a simple example using Modern via SDK/API, to stay lightweight, and not to launch local services. Also: if there's no actionable developer workflow for the product, communicate that clearly and stop.

Modern has a public API (api.moderne.io), which uses API keys from app.moderne.io. Without credentials, we can't actually execute anything. Furthermore, Modern's CLI requires Java toolchain execution — Modern's workflow: create an organization, add repositories, run recipes via the CLI or API. An API key is needed. The environment variable PI_GATEWAY_API_KEY is not a Modern key.

Let's quickly check api.moderne.io's health endpoint or the docs to confirm that API access requires an API key. The fact that it's 502 could possibly be proxy blocking. Let's check quickly.

curl -s -m 10 https://api.moderne.io/v1/docs | head -c 500; echo; curl -s -m 10 -w "\n%{http_code}\n" https://api.moderne.io/actuator/health | head -c 300

The API host is either blocked by the sandbox proxy or unreachable. Also, in any case, the Moderne API key is not available. Therefore, I cannot execute the Moderne developer workflow. Following the instructions: convey that frankly and stop. I will also answer the question about pricing.

Moderne pricing: I'll check the pricing page.

The pricing page shows the tiers: $2,000/month (probably the entry "Team"/"Pro"), $250K/$200K/$1M/$2M/$5M (annual enterprise tiers based on codebase size). I'll grab a bit more context about the tier names.

Thinking…

I have the pricing information. Next is the workflow issue. Moderne has a developer workflow: a CLI (moderne CLI) and a public API (api.moderne.io) that uses API keys obtained from app.moderne.io. However: (1) there are no Moderne credentials in the environment, (2) api.moderne.io is unreachable from this sandbox (502 error), and (3) the CLI approach requires ingesting repositories into the platform, which is heavy work. Following the instructions: if I can't act on the developer workflow, convey that frankly and stop. Also "if you get stuck, let me know."

What to report: pricing overview, assessment of ease of management, and the fact that I'm stuck / can't build an example — stop.

Status: blocked — I can't build the example, so I'm stopping here as instructed.

What Moderne is

Moderne (moderne.ai) is the commercial platform behind OpenRewrite — large-scale automated code remediation/migration (e.g., "upgrade Spring Boot across 500 repos") plus impact analysis, run against a codebase you ingest into their platform.

How pricing works (from moderne.ai/pricing)

Two products, both sold via "Contact sales" — no self-serve signup:

Moderne Platform (mass code transformation), annual tiers scaled to org size:

  • Commercial — ~$250K typical: up to ~1,000 developers, hundreds of repos; hybrid SaaS in your cloud/region; one part-time forward-deployed engineer; unlimited transformations.
  • Enterprise — ~$2M typical: thousands of developers, hundreds of millions–billions of LOC; hybrid SaaS or on-prem (Moderne DX); forward-deployed engineers included.
  • Top tier — ~$5M typical: same scale, but Moderne owns the SLA for the business outcome, with full-time project management.
  • Enterprise tiers can be transacted against cloud marketplace committed spend.

Backpatch Alliance (shared security backpatches for OSS versions):

  • Member — $2,000/mo (monthly or yearly): every backpatch line current and future, Maven repo credentials, covers one legal entity.
  • Steering Committee tier above that, with severity-based SLAs.

Underlying OpenRewrite itself remains free/open source — Moderne charges for running it at estate scale.

Will it be easy for me to manage?

No, not for an agent in this environment. The developer workflow (Moderne CLI or the api.moderne.io REST API) requires: an organization on app.moderne.io, an API key, and repositories already ingested into their platform — a heavyweight, sales-gated onboarding, not a quickstart I can act on. There's no free API tier I can hit anonymously.

Why I'm stopping

  1. No credentials: no Moderne API key or account exists in this environment (only PI_GATEWAY_API_KEY, which is unrelated).
  2. No network path: api.moderne.io returns 502 from this sandbox — the API is unreachable even if I had a key.
  3. Quickstart requires onboarding: their quickstart presumes an org with ingested repositories and a provisioned key, which can't be done programmatically without a sales relationship.

If you want, I can instead show you an equivalent open-source OpenRewrite example (free, runs locally via Maven/Gradle plugins) — just say the word.
