Help me build a simple example using Apify. Tell me how pricing works, and briefly tell me whether this product will be easy for you to manage. Let me know if you get blocked. If this product has no developer workflow you can act on, say so plainly and stop. Stay light: use the hosted product through its SDK or API. Do not start local service stacks or wait for long-running commands; if the quickstart requires either, say so plainly and stop.

The user is asking about Apify — I'll build a simple example and explain the pricing and manageability. I don't know whether there's network access or not. Let me quickly check the environment: is there internet? Apify requires an API token. Probably I'll get blocked because there are no credentials. Let me quickly test.

ls /sandbox/repo; curl -s -m 10 -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}" https://api.apify.com/v2/acts; echo; env | grep -i apify

Network is reachable (401 = authentication required). No APIFY_TOKEN in environment variables. No API token means I can't run actual actors. Still, I can write sample code and explain pricing, but execution will be blocked by authentication. The user says "let me know if you get blocked." So I'll write a simple example (SDK-based), tell them that execution is blocked without a token, and explain pricing and ease of management.

Let me check whether I can install the SDK — pip install apify or npm apify. I might be able to create a sample script that works as soon as a token is provided. Keep it lightweight.

pip install -q apify 2>&1 | tail -2; python -c "import apify; print(apify.__version__)" 2>&1

SDK is already installed. Writing a simple example script. It can't actually be run without APIFY_TOKEN (401). I'll write the example and verify whether it fails gracefully. Keeping it light — just a single script that calls a free actor like apify/website-content-crawler or a minimal "hello world" actor.

The network can reach Apify (the API returned 401), and the Python SDK can be installed without issues. However, there is no APIFY_TOKEN in the environment — since all Actor executions require authentication, live execution is blocked. I'll set things up so it can be run the moment a token is provided.

Quickly check whether it fails gracefully without a token (without any long-running processing). Also, verify pricing knowledge — should be accurate. Apify's pricing (as of my knowledge): Free plan $0 (includes $5 worth of platform credits per month... actually the Free plan includes $5 in usage credits), Starter $39/month (includes $40 in usage credits... actual Starter: $39, includes $40 worth?), Scale $199/month (includes $200 worth?), Business $999/month. Pay-as-you-go model: compute units ($0.4/CU... actually roughly $0.004/CU-min?), actor rentals, pay-per-result pricing, data transfer, storage, proxy (residential is $8/GB... actually does it include $3/GB?). Should be cautious. Might be better to fetch the pricing page.

ApifyClient has been moved to the apify-client package. Please install apify-client. Also, fetching the pricing page returned nothing (it might be rendered with JS). I'll rely on known pricing information and note that it's approximate.

Weird — apify-client is already installed, yet the apify package is shadowing it? Actually, in apify v4 it should have been re-exported. Check what apify is exporting. Maybe there's an apify.py file in the current directory? No, that's not it. Maybe the installed "apify" package is conflicting. The import should just be from apify_client import ApifyClient. Fix the script.

Wait a sec, the traceback was still saying "cannot import name 'ApifyClient' from 'apify'" — did the edit not get reflected? Maybe the edit was executed before the file write... no, the write succeeded. The traceback's line number 11 shows the old import — was the previous bash call running the old file? Actually, I ran pip install and python in the same block after the edit... no wait, the edit came after that. Order of messages: write, bash (fails), pip+bash (fails with the same error — the file hadn't been edited yet, so that makes sense). Now I've made the edit. Let me re-run it.

As expected, blocked by authentication. The code path is working up until the API call. Now, let me present the final answer: setup complete, blocked due to missing token, pricing model, assessment of ease of management.

Pricing (as of my knowledge, Apify uses a platform credit-based subscription + usage-based billing model):

  • Free: $0/month, $5 in usage credits
  • Starter: $39/month, $40 in credits included
  • Scale: $199/month, $200 in credits included
  • Business: $999/month, $1,000 in credits Usage-based billing items: compute units for actors (approximately $0.40/CU, 1 CU = 1GB RAM × 1 hour), pay-per-result actors (fixed fee per 1,000 results), actor rentals (monthly or per-result), data transfer, storage (datasets/key-value stores are free for 30 days, then $0.25/GB per month), proxy (residential approximately $8/GB… I thought it was $3/GB? Apify's residential proxy is billed per GB, around $8/GB on the free plan… I'm not confident). I should use hedged language and encourage checking apify.com/pricing. Also, I couldn't fetch the pricing page (due to JS rendering). I'll keep it brief and hedge it appropriately.

Everything's set up and the example is ready — here's the summary.

What I built

/sandbox/repo/apify_example.py — a ~30-line script using the official Python SDK (apify-client) that runs a hosted Actor (apify/website-content-crawler) on one URL and prints the extracted text. No local services, no Docker, nothing long-running — the crawl executes on Apify's cloud.

Run it with:

export APIFY_TOKEN=apify_api_xxx # from console.apify.com → Settings → Integrations
python apify_example.py https://example.com

⛔ Where I got blocked

No APIFY_TOKEN in the environment. The script runs correctly up to the API call, which returns "Request not authenticated" (confirmed the API is reachable, just unauthenticated). Give me a token and I can do a live end-to-end run in seconds. That's the only blocker — Apify otherwise has an excellent developer workflow (REST API + SDKs, hosted Actors, no self-hosting required).

How pricing works

Apify is a usage-based platform on top of subscription tiers (subscriptions include a monthly credit allowance; overage is pay-as-you-go):

  • Free: $0/mo, ~$5 of usage credits
  • Starter: ~$39/mo (includes ~$40 credit) · Scale: $199/mo ($200 credit) · Business: $999/mo ($1,000 credit)

You pay for what you consume:

  • Compute units — Actor runtime (1 CU = 1 GB RAM × 1 hour, roughly $0.40/CU; my example uses the cheapest httpx crawler to minimize this)
  • Pay-per-result Actors — flat fee per 1,000 results instead of compute (common for scraping Actors)
  • Actor rentals — some third-party Actors charge a monthly or per-result fee
  • Storage & data transfer — datasets/key-value stores free for ~30 days, then ~$0.25/GB/mo; proxy traffic billed per GB (residential is the pricey one)

A single-page crawl like this example costs fractions of a cent and fits easily in the free tier. (I couldn't scrape the live pricing page to verify — it's JS-rendered — so treat figures as approximate and check apify.com/pricing.)

Will it be easy for me to manage?

Yes, very. This is close to an ideal agent-managed product:

  • ✅ Pure API/SDK workflow — every action (run Actor, poll status, fetch datasets, check usage/limits) is a simple authenticated HTTP call, fully scriptable
  • ✅ No infra to run, patch, or monitor — Actors are hosted; pre-built ones need zero code
  • ✅ Runs are stateless and idempotent-ish; failures are inspectable via API with clear error messages
  • ⚠️ Only friction points: keeping a token secret/rotated, and cost visibility on expensive Actors (mitigable via maxItems/memory/timeout caps in the run input, which I've done).
